Why Filipino Seafarers ?

FILIPINO SEAFARERS — A LEGACY BORN FROM THE SEA

Long before the Philippines became a global maritime manpower center, the Filipino people were already a seafaring nation. Archaeological evidence from the Balangay boats of Butuan, including one dated to approximately AD 320, demonstrates sophisticated boatbuilding and seafaring in the Philippine archipelago more than 1,700 years ago. Ancient Filipino communities used boats for trade, exploration, fishing, migration and communication across the seas of Southeast Asia. This maritime heritage evolved through centuries into the modern Filipino seafarer—skilled, adaptable, resilient and comfortable working in multicultural environments. Today, the Philippines remains one of the world’s principal sources of maritime manpower, with Filipino seafarers recognized internationally for their competence, training and reliability. MARINA reports that approximately 890,000 Filipino seafarers were certified to international standards as of August 2026, while DMW recorded 589,179 sea-based deployments in 2025.
